At Thompson Intermediate, students are digging into science with the help of the Gardening Club, led by the enthusiastic Mrs. Meyers and Ms. Muto. This hands-on club offers students a chance to explore plant life, sustainability, and the wonders of nature through fun, interactive activities. Whether working in the indoor growing area or tending to the outdoor garden, members are learning valuable lessons about biology, ecosystems, and environmental responsibility.
In the indoor growing space, students are experimenting with different lighting, watering, and soil conditions to see how plants respond. They’re currently growing a variety of herbs, flowers and vegetables. Outside, the club is tending the spring garden, learning about the proper time and placement of plants. The garden club will be growing a pollinator flowers garden, this will all the TIS students to learning about pollination of plants.
Science is at the heart of every activity in the Gardening Club. Students observe firsthand how plants absorb nutrients, how weather affects growth, and even how insects like bees and butterflies contribute to the ecosystem. Through hands-on experiences, they are exploring photosynthesis and sustainable gardening practices.
The Garden Club strives to create a space that can be shared by students, staff, parents, and the community. They achieved this during their Fall Planting Party, when the PTO, students, parents and the Garden Club came together to plant and enjoy cider and treats as they gathered in the garden. Recently the Girl Scouts visited the garden and helped plant flowers in one of the raised beds. This visit also involved a planning session. The Girl Scouts plan to build and donate a container to store tools and supplies that will also function as a potting table.
Mrs. Meyers ensures that every meeting is filled with excitement, whether students are planting seeds, or creating hybrid hydroponic planters. The club not only fosters a love of gardening but also encourages teamwork, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Thanks to her leadership, students are gaining both scientific knowledge and life skills, one plant at a time.
The Gardening Club continues to blossom, and with each new season, students are eager to see what they can grow next!
