Ms. Caldwell's 8th grade Art classes recently designed a poster in connection with the annual Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest. This year's theme was "Peace Without Limit."
Ms. Caldwell says that she participates in this contest by first showing students various poster examples. They discuss what catches their eye first in each and why. Next, they review the five techniques of fffective design, which are: eye-catching, effective use of space, legible, informative, and center of interest. Then, they create a rough draft of their poster design employing the steps of the design process (brainstorm, sketch, proof, enlarge, proof, add color), working on a poster board that is 11" x 14".
Three of our teachers at TMS then select a first, second, and third place winner, as well as any honorable mentions for the school-wide contest. Then, Ms. Caldwell gives all of these selected posters to Mr. Rick Walters of the local Alabaster Lions Chapter. The chapter then selects their choice for winning local poster from our school-wide winners. They then send their selected poster on to the regional competition. If selected, it will travel to the national then the international competition. The grand prize winner receives $5,000 and a trip with two family members to the awards ceremony.
These are our winners for the TMS school-wide competition:
First Place: Martina Cardozo
Second Place: Elizabeth Perez
Third Place: Marbeli Escalante
Honorable Mentions: Eli Terrell, Angel Calderon, Addie Burks & Angie Gomez
All receive certificates and the top three winning students receive token art supplies.
The Alabaster Lions Club selected the poster by Elizabeth Perez to travel on to the regional competition.
