Dr. Wayne Vickers has more than thirty years of experience as a teacher and administrator in public education. He has served in classroom and administrative roles at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in various diverse settings, with additional experience at the district and state levels.
Dr. Vickers has a proven record of increasing student achievement and stakeholder involvement in all areas. He has deep knowledge of each component of the school improvement process and its implementation. He has direct experience with federal programs and all facets of pupil support services. Dr. Vickers has coordinated various capital improvement projects across the state, including new school construction, classroom additions, and athletic complexes.
In July 2013, Dr. Vickers was introduced as the first superintendent of education for the newly-formed Alabaster City School System (ACS), with more than 6,000 students across five campuses. ACS truly represents a slice of America with multiple nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and socioeconomic statuses represented. Since the formation of ACS, the district has completed a five-year strategic plan and gained AdvancED District Accreditation. In 2018, ACS opened the new, standard-setting Thompson High School campus, for which Dr. Vickers was the visionary. He and his team currently oversee other multi-million dollar capital projects including a new district administration building as well as designs for a new career technical center. In late 2023, Dr. Vickers traveled to Washington, D.C., to formally accept an Exemplary High Performing National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award for Creek View Elementary School, the first Alabaster-area school to ever earn a national accolade from the U.S. Department of Education.
From 2009 through 2013, Dr. Vickers served as superintendent of education for the Saraland (AL) City School System after its formation as independent of Mobile County Public Schools. He was instrumental in opening the new Saraland High School campus and other major capital projects. He previously served as superintendent of education for Demopolis City Schools and has additional experience in Birmingham City Schools, St. Clair County Schools, Tuscaloosa City Schools, Tuscaloosa County Schools, and Coffee County Schools, as well as the Kentucky Department of Education.
Dr. Vickers has extensive experience with AASA - the School Superintendents Association. He is a current member of AASA’s National Executive Committee, a past member of the association’s Governing Board, and was named a top three national finalist for AASA President-Elect in 2024. Dr. Vickers has also been on the School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) Board of Directors since 2010 and currently serves as SSA President.
Dr. Vickers' civic involvement includes serving on the University of Alabama’s Capstone Education Society Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees for the American Village Citizenship Trust, the Boy Scouts of America/Greater Alabama Council, and being a past president of the Alabaster Lions Club. He is also an adjunct professor for the University of West Alabama’s School of Education.
Dr. Vickers and his wife, Pamela Copeland Vickers, have two sons: Jordan and Will. Jordan is a University of Alabama graduate with a degree in business and is a teacher/coach at Thompson High School. Will is also a University of Alabama graduate with a degree in Communications and currently works for Mississippi State University.
